Check out this incredibly interesting column from Yahoo’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Apparently, Kentucky forward Randolph Morris — who scored 16 points and had 10 rebounds and four blocks in the Wildcats’ 59-54 win against Indiana — is technically a free agent. Any NBA team could offer him a contract right now and swipe him away from Kentucky.
Turns out there’s a loophole in the new NBA collective bargaining agreement that turns any player who declares for the draft and then returns to school into a free agent. In fact, Morris isn’t even eligible for a future draft. He HAS to be signed as a free agent, and that can happen at any time. He could play for the Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday and the Boston Celtics on Sunday.
What are your thoughts on this? It’s certainly a strange situation but surely somebody will find a way to exploit this kink in the system until it is fixed. It’s worth watching.
By the way, Wojnarowski is probably the most underrated columnist in the country. He wrote for the Bergen Record, a paper on the outskirts of New York, and didn’t get nearly the publicity he should have because there are so many great writers in the city. Now that he has a national platform he’ll become a household — and yet unpronouncable — name to basketball fans. If you love the NBA you should add him to your must-read list.
Why would Morris accept the pay cut associated with an NBA contract?
On top of the pay cut, Morris would have to give up his sloth-like post moves. Seriously, the guy could have been a first rounder after his freshman year, but he has no energy (translation- no heart). He’s like a pudgy Tim Duncan without the fundamentals/skills. Things will never get better for him than they are at UK.
