After a Dec. 3, 2005 incident when he pushed a referee during a game, IU basketball recruit Eli Holman was suspended 18 months from his high school basketball team by then principal Terri Ishmael.
At the time of the incident Holman was only a junior, but if his suspension were to hold up, it would keep him from Richmond High School his entire senior year.
The California native decided to file an appeal hoping to reduce his suspension so he could regain his eligibility, but the appeals process has now come to a temporary halt.
“There was some delay getting the paperwork in,†Richmond assistant principal Nancy Ivey said.
Ivey said she hadn’t heard any updates on Holman’s appeal, but she was expecting to hear word of the decision soon. Whether or not Holman will get to play his senior season comes at the hands of the California Interscholastic Federation.
On Monday, CIF Executive Director Marie Ishida declined to comment regarding Holman’s case. Via her receptionist, Ishida said that all information requests would have to go through Holman’s school and family.
The 6-foot-9 center is the only member of the Hoosier’s 2007 recruiting class that has yet to play a game this season. Holman missed his team’s first action last weekend when Richmond participated in the Jeremy Jack Invitational.
As of November 10, it appeared that Homan’s suspension would, in fact, be reduced. Richmond assistant coach Lonnie Coleman said at the time “all things are pointing to reinstatement.â€
At the time, news was expected soon involving Holman’s appeal, but no updates involving the appeals process have been made until now.
Although he has been suspended for the last calendar year, Holman is heavily regarded as one of the top pivots in the nation. In Rivals prospect rankings for centers in the class of 2007, Holman ranks as the No. 10 center in the country.
Before the suspension his junior year, Holman was averaging 11 points, 12 rebounds and 12 blocks per game for Richmond.
Here’s an update that adds very little to this discussion but is noteworthy anyway:
During his radio show on Monday night, Indiana head coach Kelvin Sampson was asked about Holman’s status. He replied that he hadn’t checked in a few days and said that assistant Ray McCallum was working most closely with Holman.
