Well, after some research, it looks like the Hoosiers will be playing a team that mirrors them in many ways come Dec. 31. The Cowboys went 6-6 overall and 4-4 in the Big 12. They finished tied for third in the Big XII South along with Texas and Texas Tech.
And yes, for those of you wondering, it was OK State head coach Mike Gundy who was the YouTube hit earlier this fall for a post-game tirade on a reporter. You can see the video here. Still makes me laugh.
Anyway, as for the Cowboys, they’ll bring a powerful offense to Tempe and give the IU defense all they can handle. However, their resume lacks an impressive victory. Their best wins are arguably home against Kansas State (41-39) and Texas Tech (48-45) and on the road against Nebraska (45-14). But then again, who didn’t kill Nebraska? The Cowboys also were beaten badly a few times:
- 41-23 at Troy (who’s actually pretty good, believe it or not)
- 43-28 home vs. Kansas
- 49-17 at Oklahoma
The Cowboy attack is led by a sophomore quarterback, Zac Robinson, but it hasn’t taken him long to become a favorite of the fans in Stillwater. Robinson’s had a 100+ passer rating in every game except for one and accounted for 20 touchdowns on the year and 2,522 passing yards. Like Kellen Lewis, he can also do it on the ground, as he ran for 68 yards a contest and seven scores.
As a team, here’s how they finished up in the Big XII Conference.
- Tied for 7th in Scoring Offense (33.4 yards a game)
- 4th in Total Offense (484.1 yards a game)
- 10th in total defense, giving up 447.6 yards per game
- 12th and last in pass defense, surrendering 292.8 yards a contest. (Somewhere in Bloomington, Kellen Lewis and James Hardy are smiling)
They also have a serious threat on the outside in Wide Receiver Adarius Bowman, a 6-4 220 lb. monster that has NFL scouts drooling. He finished fourth in the conference with 93.1 receiving yards a contest and hauled in seven touchdowns. I’d expect the Hoosiers to put Tracy Porter on the ever-dangerous Bowman.
They also have a very capable running back threat in Dantrell Savage. The senior ranked second in the Big XII with 117.2 yards a contest and found the endzone eight times.
How does everyone think IU will matchup with the Cowboys? Needless to say, and I’m sure the Insight Bowl selectors considered this, it should be an entertaining contest as two high-powered offenses battle it out on New Year’s Eve.
