Hoosiers battle Wisconsin, in-game analysis

A D.J. White block.

Yes, there still is a basketball game tonight.

A pretty big one actually.

Big enough that Colts Tony Dungy has decided to make an appearance. He’s sitting in the first row right behind the scorer’s table.

__

The Hoosiers are on the court for their final warm-ups. Kelvin Sampson just walked onto the court and he’s met with a mixture of cheers and boos from the Indiana crowd. Should be interesting when his name is announced over the loudspeaker. We’ll see what happens.

__

Couldn’t really tell. A mixture more than anything else. There were scattered boos thrown in with some cheers.

__

Jamarcus Ellis can’t end the scoreless drought with a three-pointer from the left wing, and it remains scoreless nearly two minutes in.

Indiana is in their zone, and Trevon Hughes thinks he can shoot over it. Wrong. It clanks off the iron.

On the next possession, D.J. White finishes a baseline jumper for the first basket of the game. The Indiana crowd is into it.

Marcus Landry can’t answer. D.J. White can. Armon Bassett misfires on a short jumper, and White stuffs it in for a 4-0 lead.

__

D.J. is one fire. He nails a jumper from the right wing and it’s 6-0. He’s got all of Indiana’s points.

Michael Flowers answers on the other end with a 3-pointer, but back comes IU with an Eric Gordon lay-in. White partially blocks Landry’s attempted dunk, but on the other end, Jamarcus Ellis’ pass to White in the post rolls out of bounds.

It’s 8-3 Indiana at the 15:07 mark.

__

Jason Bohannon’s answers on the first play after the time-out. He nails a 3 from the top of the key to cut the margin to two.

But Armon Bassett answers back, nailing a deep two to make it 10-4.

It’s apparent that the Hoosiers are ready to play. Maybe they’re using cloud of doubt from the NCAA report today as motivation, and maybe they’re not. But they’re playing well. They’re attacking on offense and hitting their open looks.

Bohannon, a moment after airballing a 3-point try, nails one from the left wing and it’s 12-9. Hoosiers lead.

He doesn’t seem to be affected by the rampant “airball” chants coming from the Assembly Hall crowd. Bohannon drains another, and it’s all tied up, 12-12.

Lance Stemler nails a 3-pointer from the top of the key to liven up the fans after Wisconsin’s short run.

D.J. White refuses to let Marcus Landry get an easy lay-in on the next possession, and IU takes over.

__

It’s almost as if White took a personal vendetta into this game. He’s looking to score every time he gets the ball– and doing exactly that. He’s got 10 points through nine minutes after a leaning jumper and Wisconsin has no one that can stop him right now.

__

DeAndre Thomas, who hasn’t scored in what seems like a month, nails a turn around near the basket and the IU crowd erupts.

Jamarcus Ellis nicely uses his body to free up his left hand on the opposite end for a tip-in. 21-14 IU.

__

A DeAndre Thomas follow is followed on the other end by a pretty 3-pointer from Michael Flowers.

Bassett answers. 25-17.

Flowers sticks another– this time from even deeper and right before the shot clock expired. Ellis couldn’t have played tighter defense on him. Flowers just made a tough shot.

__

The 3-point streak continues, as Bohannon nails his fourth of the game to cut the lead to two.

Eric Gordon drives the lane and is fouled. He’ll shoot two.

He hits them both.

The teams trade baskets, Michael Flowers hitting a pretty runner for Wisconsin before Jordan Crawford answers.

On the following possession, Bassett is fouled. Time-out. Indiana leads by two, 29-27.

__

Bassett uncharacteristically misses the first, but nails the second. IU now leads by three.

Bohannon finally does miss a 3-pointer, but someone forgets to block out Brian Butch. He tips in the miss to give Wisconsin their first lead of the night.

D.J. White answers. He drains a baby hook in the lane to give IU the lead again, but Trevon Hughes nails a deep 3 at the other end.

White is playing as aggressive as he has all year. He goes right at Greg Steimsta and draws contact, enough for the foul call.

He drains them both. 34-34 Indiana.

Eric Gordon drives the lane on a loose break on the next play, draws contact and lays it in. The crowd reacts to the whistle and assumes an And-1 call. But that’s not the case, says the referee. He sends Gordon to the line for two and dismisses the shot.

He makes them both. IU is up a basket.

Steimsta answers with a deep jumper.

On IU’s next possession, Armon Bassett rebounds his own miss and is fouled on the follow-up.

The point guard misses the first but swishes the next.

Wisconsin’s two shots at the buzzer bounce out.

IU leads at the break by one.

How can the process investigating K.S. can be trusted when the person in charge is the the one who hired K.S. in the first place?

We need someone totally impartial. Of course, the best solution would be to fire th A.D. first and have the new A.D. investigate K.S.

Why did the threat of players walking out alter the decision to decide who coaches one of the premier coaching jobs, why do we have antiquated outdated facilities, why do we hire a convicted cheater to lead us to our rightful place – POUR LEADERSHIP – PERIOD- FIRE GREENSPAN

today has to be the worst day for indiana basketball in a long time. i live in wisconsin and don’t have the big ten network so i was forced to listen to wisco radio. i couldn’t believe what i heard when butch knocked down that last shot. what a horrible end to a devastating day. a lot of people consider bob knight a god. well a lot of bad has come since we so gracefully sent him packing. i don’t ordinarily buy into ancient greek mythology but maybe we angered the gods and now karma is weilding its ugly hand.

    sad sad iu fan

I don’t have BTN nor any radio access. What happened after the 3-pointer?
