Big Ten suspends IU baseball coach and reprimands Hoosier team

The Big Ten has suspended IU baseball coach Tracy Smith for two games for their actions during a game against Fresno State on March 12.

According to a news release, an argument between Smith and Fresno State coach Mike Batesole led to both teams leaving their dugouts. Smith was suspended for his actions during that argument.

Here’s the news release from the Big Ten:

Park Ridge, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference office announced today that the Indiana baseball team has been publicly reprimanded and head coach Tracy Smith has received a two-game suspension for violating the Big Ten Sportslike Conduct Agreement during a non-conference game against Fresno State on March 12.

In accordance with penalties established in Big Ten Conference Agreement 10.01.1.A.2, the Big Ten publicly reprimands the Indiana baseball team and suspends the head coach for their actions during an argument between Smith and Fresno State head coach Mike Batesole, which led to both teams leaving their respective dugouts. Smith will be suspended for the Hoosiers next two games against IPFW on Saturday, March 22, and Sunday, March 23.

The Big Ten Conference considers this matter concluded and will have no further comment.

Seems like it Fresno threw at an IU batter so I am on Tracy’s side on this one. I guess with the B-ball team totally disappointing, it’s time for baseball?

Nothing surprises me anymore about IU sports. Once pretty much a showcase of talent, discipline, and good character. It made you feel good to be a psart of it. Now, it’s a sleazy, embarrassing mess. Just a lot of greedy hands and noisy foul-mouthed drunks. The few bright lights get muddied real good in this university. Whoever said, “It’s time to clean the stables at IU right up to the Trustees” nailed it but good.

After reading the article, sounds to me that Coach Smith was standing up for one of his own and Fresno’s coach was feeling the strain of a rough start to his season.
