Bugg, Sears headed to mini-camps

After speaking with Tim Bugg and Josiah Sears late this afternoon, here’s the latest on the former Hoosiers — neither has signed a free agent contract, but both have been invited to mini-camps.

Bugg will be at the Cincinnati Bengals mini-camp this weekend and New York Giants the following weekend.

“It’s not as good as I’d hoped,” said Bugg, who had hoped to receive a free agent contract after being rated as the top long snapper available. “But if I do well enough, I could get signed.”

Sears will participate in the Chicago Bears mini-camp this weekend. He expects them to look at him at both fullback and the wingback spot he also played last season in catching passes coming out of the backfield.

“I’m happy to be going,” Sears said. “Hopefully, things will work out there.”

For Bugg, with most teams having only one long snapper on their roster, his best chance to make a pro team will likely come when a team has a problem – an injury or bad performance – with its current long snapper.

To show how frustrating it can be for an undrafted free agent in trying to get an NFL deal, it was reported on several Kansas City Chief fan Web sites yesterday that the Chiefs had signed former Hoosier Blake Powers to a free agent contact, but that turned out to be incorrect. Powers’ dad, Dan, said late this afternoon that a deal with the Chiefs appeared to be imminent, but then fell through.

The Chiefs were talking with Blake about coming in for a two-day tryout this week, but nothing has been set up at this point.
