Five letters in; IU expects Muniru’s tomorrow

Five of Indiana’s six 2009 recruits have submitted their letters of intent to the school, The Herald-Times has learned.

Only Bawa Muniru, the 6-11 center originally from Ghana, has yet to submit his paperwork. The delay is not unexpected: Muniru is attending Mt. Zion in Durham, N.C., while his guardians are in Alabama. So there’s a faxing/mailing issue. The hope within the program is that Muniru’s signing is completed by tomorrow’s 2 p.m. press conference, so that head coach Tom Crean can discuss him.

Christian Watford is holding a press conference later in the week, but he did send his letter in today according to sources close to the program.

I’m with you Steve O. But I still like to know where Bawa scholership is coming from. I hate to see anyone from this years team leave.

I think a number of kids know that they wont have a ride next year, let alone a spot on the bench. this is IU, we cant be in the feel good charity business for too long. As you can see, IU and Crean can still bring in the best talent. Just wait till 2010+

My guess is, we’ll know before the end of the season who won’t be back. In a way, that’s a shame…I’m actually looking forward to watching this scrappy young bunch of guys who were willing to step forward when this program was flat on it’s back. In my mind, there’s no pressure, because there are no expectations. Play hard, guys, and real Hoosier fans will support you all the way to the end of the season.

I think there will be a lot of turnover next year and the following. I hate to see anyone made to feel as if they’re not welcome, but Coach Crean is getting paid to win games and ultimately championships. To do that you need great players. I would say most of the guys on the team know they might not be back next year and some of them might not want to. Transfers happen all the time today. Florida has had 8 players transfer since the 03/04 season. Whoop-de-do. They’ve also got 2 rings since then. You have to put the best players on the floor no matter what (following the rules of course…) no matter whose feelings you may hurt.

Unless one of the scholarship wings sees that they might not get time down the line, then my guess is that Jobe’s job this season is to prove he is worthy of a scholarship. It’s just rare to take on a project like that as a junior.

If he was a freshmen I would say he’s a keeper due to his size and potential, but as a junior it’s less likely he’ll reach that potential unless he shows signs this season.

I know the cardinal rule is that you always need bigmen, but with Pritchard, Capo, Elston and even Watford being a tall and long SF, IU could fill Jobe’s spot next year with a big walk on ala Taber. Plus, Williams and Story will get experience this year playing the 4 in small lineups.

    Just a thought.

I even forget to mention Bawa above, add him to the list of bigs that make Jobe expendable is he doesn’t show progress this season.

Let’s not forget we’ve got a guy on scholarship next year who has a father that makes several million dollars a year. I’m not saying he doesn’t deserve a scholarship, but stranger things have happened than a player giving up a scholarship to help the team. Especially when his family can afford it.

There are a number of walk-ons who I suspect won’t be on the squad next season to make room for the incoming recruits.

    Sorry, Kipp Schutz.
