With her basketball eligibility up at IU, Whitney Thomas has joined the Hoosier volleyball team, IU coach Sherry Dunbar announced Friday.
The NCAA allows allows a fifth year of eligibility to play one season of a different sport.
Thomas was a volleyball standout at Bloomington North, but her sole focus was on basketball at Indiana where she became just the second women’s player in school history to score more than 1,000 points and grab more than 1,000 rebounds in her career. She’s also second on IU’s career steals list with 237.
“It’s been awhile since I’ve played competitively, but I’m ready to get back at it,” Thomas said in a news release.
Thomas graduated from IU in May, but has enrolled in graduate school and will pursue her master’s degree while playing right-side hitter for the volleyball team this fall.
The Hoosiers begin their season on August 28 at the University of Houston Tournament.
