Spring practice is coming down the home stretch. There’s just a week left before the spring game. Some news, notes and thoughts from Thursday’s session
— Wide receiver Damarlo Belcher (hamstring) and running back Darius Wills (ribs) were out of practice again Thursday. It’s starting to become an issue for these two, especially Belcher who has been out for a week and a half. It is opening up some opportunities, though. Senior Trea Burgess and freshman Nick Turner have been getting a lot of reps as first team running backs. Meanwhile wideouts Duwyce Wilson, Dre Muhammad and even Tyler Adetona have seen a lot more first team reps with both Belcher and Terrance Turner (neck surgery) out of the lineup.
— Safety Chris Adkins made the defensive play of the day during end of practice scrimmaging. Deep in the red zone, Ben Chappell looked for Dre Muhammad over the middle but Adkins broke up the pass. The ball ended up in Muhammad’s hands, and for a moment, the team didn’t realize it had hit the ground, which caused wide receivers coach Billy Lynch run and jump into Muhammad’s arms in the end zone. But eventually, the pass was ruled incomplete.
— Chappell continued to show improvement throwing the deep ball, hitting Duwyce Wilson on a deep post route for a touchdown that covered 45 yards plus.
— Cornerback Matt Ernest has continued to show he’s making a nice transition. He picked off a wobbly pass from Edward Wright-Baker in a scrimmage.
