Covington transferring; Smith leaving program as medical hardship

Heading into the summer, Indiana was still over its limit of 85 scholarship players on the football roster. However, two recent moves have brought the Hoosiers back to compliance.

Running back Shane Covington will transfer according to a source, and defensive tackle Jarrod Smith is staying at Indiana but will leave the football program because of a back injury that cost him much of last season and all spring. By NCAA rule, he will continue to receive a scholarship, but no longer counts against Indiana’s limit of 85 scholarships.

More on this story later.

Wasn’t covington recruited as a high rated receiver? When did he join the RB ranks?

Never mind, Dustin had it in the article on the pay site this morning.

This kid was rated as the #83 receiver in the nation, was moved to safety (seen no time there) then to running back where he is like 5th on the depth chart and now transfering.

He is a good athlete but could not dominate a position or find a niche for playing time. WR was his best opportunity on this team of very good and experienced receivers. I believe his decision to transfer shows the continual progress of elevating the caliber of talent in this program. Six or seven years ago he would have been a solid contributor.
