Andy Graham’s analysis

FINAL: INDIANA 35, AKRON 20

Consider the difference between how the Hoosiers and Kentucky, Akron’s opponent the week previous, handled the Zips. UK had just a 6-3 lead midway through the second quarter but then scored touchdowns on six straight possessions to comfortably put away 47-10 cruise.

END THIRD QUARTER: INDIANA 35, AKRON 13

Even when the Hoosiers score on the ground, sometimes it’s a wide receiver, as was the case when Tandon Doss scooted in from nine yards out on an end-around to open the second half scoring. with 1:33 left in the third period.
By that time, IU had already amassed 276 yards passing compared to 57 rushing.

HALFTIME: INDIANA 28, AKRON 13

Michigan might score 80 points next Saturday at Indiana.

Then again, it might need to.

Akron, not exactly an offensive juggernaut, already has 116 yards rushing on 16 attempts at halftime, and the Hoosier defensive front is either getting blocked or missing tackles. Denard Robinson, UM’s quarterback, can be excused for salivating when he views the first half film from this one. Michigan had 297 yards in the first quarter today against Bowling Green, and the IU defense looks every bit as susceptible as the Falcons’ did.

On the other hand, IU’s passing offense is so potent, it can cure a lot of ills. Ben Chappell already has his first career four-passing-TD game, here at intermission, and Terrance Turner has six catches for 116 yards and a TD, personally offsetting Akron’s rushing total. The IU tight ends were also extremely well utilized, with three TD receptions between Ted Bolser and Max Dedmond.

Given how both offenses look, the IU-Michigan game, with a 3:30 p.m. kickoff, might last till midnight.

—————————————————————————————

Maybe this “Touchdown Ted” Bolser moniker is going to stick. Indiana leads after one quarter, 14-3, with both IU TDs on completions to the redshirt-freshman tight end. Bolser now has four TD receptions on the season, the most for a Hoosier tight end in a season since Bob Stephenson had four in 1979.

Some of Indiana’s rushing game and defensive issues still look extant, however. IU’s first six rushes produced 16 yards, and Akron is moving the ball at times, and the Hoosiers are missing tackles galore.

FIRST QUARTER
Late (perhaps never-)-arriving crowd sees Tandon Doss with a fine opening kickoff return for the second straight week, setting up a 6-play, 51-yard scoring drive for Indiana. It was capped by a 10-yard scoring pass from Ben Chappell to a wide-open tight end “Touchdown Ted” Bolser, who looked to be about the third check-down receiver on the play. Ewald’s kick makes it 7-0.

Akron responded with a methodical, 9-play, 41-yard march that produced a 45-yard field goal by Igor Iveljic. 7-3 Indiana with 8:21 left in the first.

Will Igor get Akron over the hump?

The point about the scoring potential in the Michigan game is on target. Problem is IU will have to score 50 weekly to win B10 with that atrocious D. Slower than molasses. Actually, really pitiful considering the offensive prowess that will be wasted without even a mediocre defensive complement.

We have given up over a thousand yards to 3 teams whose combined record is 1-11.

There is no sugar-coating these statistics in any way.

Clarion, these teams are not only in bad divisions to begin with. They are the worst teams in bad divisions.

Extant? This Akron team has good talent on offense.
