Report: IU to hire Miami (OH) RB’s Coach

Miami (Ohio) running backs coach Deland McCullough will be named the new running backs coach at Indiana according to a report by Tom Dienhart of Rivals.com.

McCullough was the offensive/special teams intern under Mike Haywood on last year’s Miami (Ohio) team that won the Mid-American Conference Championship. Haywood left to take the job at Pittsburgh but was fired on Jan. 1 because of domestic violence charges.

Miami’s new coach, former Michigan State offensive coordinator Don Treadwell, promoted McCullough, the only member of Haywood’s staff who stayedwith the program, to running backs coach, but if Dienhart’s report is true, McCullough will leave that position before spring practice.

McCullough was a three-time All-MAC selection at Miami as a tailback, receiving first-team honors in 1992 and 1995 and second-team mention in 1994. He ended his Miami career as all-time leading rusher in Miami and in the MAC with 4,368 yards. He played professionally with the Cincinnati Bengals and Philadelphia Eagles as well as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League.

If McCullough is hired, he would complete new IU head coach Kevin Wilson’s staff. The Hoosiers had initially hired Air Force’s Jemal Singleton for the position, but Singleton left to take a job at Oklahoma State.

McCullough played for Miami OH when Wilson was the offensive coordinator.

Is anyone certain as to whether Spring practice is to be open to fans or not? If affirmative the question would be what time each day.

HC,
I don’t know if this is going to be standard, but I know the first practice is open to the media only for the first half hour. I don’t know if fans have the same access or not. Early indications are that the Wilson administration isn’t going to be quite as open as the Lynch administration.
