Broad Ripple guard Ron Patterson the second player to commit to Indiana’s vaunted 2012 class and the one who dubbed it “The Movement” signed his letter of intent at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, leaving Lawrence Central swingman Jeremy Hollowell as the last of the five committed players waiting to sign. Hollowell has a signing day ceremony scheduled for 7 p.m.
Patterson was asked the words “The Movement” have come to mean to him.
“It means hang banners and win championships,” Patterson said.
Though Patterson is rated fourth of the five players in the Class, checking in at 131 in Rivals.com’s Top 150 rankings for the class, his unique skill set could make him the piece of the puzzle that makes that possible. The 6-foot-3, 195-pounder has a 6-10 wingspan and unlike most top prospects, is better known for his abilities as a defender than for his offensive skills.
“His big asset is on the defensive end,” Broad Ripple coach Scott Hicks said. “I think Ron Patterson is one of the best defenders in the area, in the state. He has a great opportunity to in with that special class and help them anyway he can. His wingspan is like no other. He’s outstanding. At 6-3, he plays probably 6-5, 6-6 and has great length. He’s long, he’s very athletic, quick and he competes. He’s a young man who wants to play defense. And he’s a gym rat. You get those tangibles, and he’s a great defender.”
He is trying to add to his offensive game though, and is especially trying to work on his point guard skills. That could be necessary especially for the 2013-14 season. The Hoosiers will likely still have Yogi Ferrell as the starting point guard at that point, but they don’t have another point guard committed to be in the program at that point.
“We’re looking to play him at probably three positions including the point guard,” Hicks said. “So he can be able to handle the ball a lot more under those circumstances with pressure and things of that nature. Making point guard decisions. Those are things he’s gonna have to work on, really his ball handling, going left, going right. Things without the ball and running a team.”
