2012
Yogi Ferrell (Park Tudor): I watched Ferrell take on Lawrence North in the Marion County Tournament last week, and Ferrell did not disappoint. He tallied 26 points in that game and was almost unstoppable from the top of the key, whether it was driving to the hole or hitting contested 3-pointers. He followed up that performance with another solid one, 25 points, in a loss to Pike. Ferrell is who we thought he was, and his Park Tudor team has a very good chance at competing for another state championship in Class 2A.
Ron Patterson (Broad Ripple): Patterson had one of his best games of the season against Fort Wayne South on Jan. 14, tallying 31 points, nine rebounds, and three steals. He still is taking a lot of shots, which will change at IU, but his offensive game looks like it’s developing. He also added 18 points the night before against Arlington.
Jeremy Hollowell (Lawrence Central): Hollowell’s team also lost in the second round of the Marion County Tournament, and after tallying an impressive 24 points in the Bears’ first-round blowout win, Hollowell was held to nine points by North Central in a loss. He did add 15 rebounds in that game, an impressive total for sure, but North Central focused in on Hollowell and shut him down, relatively soundly, on the offensive end.
Hanner Perea (La Lumiere): In three games last week, Perea averaged around nine points and grabbed seven or eight rebounds for a relatively quiet week. Perea had been scoring more lately, but just by analyzing the final scores, it appears these games were pretty much blowouts.
Peter Jurkin (UFCA): Jurkin had a solid effort early last week, adding a team-high 20 points in a forty-point win and continued to show that he’s added a new scoring edge to his repertoire.
2013
Collin Hartman (Cathedral): Hartman had two relatively quiet games as far as scoring goes, but both Cathedral games were defensive battles. He had nine points in both of Cathedral’s games in the past week, a loss to Carmel and a win at the Flyin’ to the Hoop tournament in Dayton.
Devin Davis (Warren Central): As the third IU commit in the Marion County Tournament, Davis may have had the most impressive showing. In defense-heavy games, Davis proved to be the best offense by a long shot, adding 20 points in both of Warren Central’s games. In the team’s loss to Ben Davis, those 20 points constituted almost 50 percent of Warren Central’s offense. He also added 12 rebounds in the team’s first round win over Roncalli.
Luke Fischer (Germantown, WI): The big news on Fischer is that he broke a finger on his right hand in practice on Jan. 12 and could miss up to a month. He added 24 points in Germantown’s win, prior to his injury.
BeeJay Anya (DeMatha, MD): Anya is starting to get attention from big-time programs, and he’s shown why lately. He added a team-high 24 points in the team’s most recent win on Jan. 14. He did have just 11 and 12 points in performances prior to that game.
Bo Zeigler (Detroit Community): Zeigler continues to carry the scoring load for Community, putting up 18 and 19 points in games llast week. He also hadded eight rebounds and four blacks in the team’s win over Ecorse.
Derek Willis (Bullitt East, KY): With his decision slated to come on Friday, this could be the last team you see Willis on IU RecruitWatch. All signs point to him going to Kentucky, especially with just one possible spot likely open for IU from here on out. Willis tallied 15 points in one game of the Louisville Invitational and seven points in the other (he added six rebounds in that game, as well).
2014
Trey Lyles (Arsenal Tech): Trey Lyles continued dominating down low on the scoreboard and on the glass, registering the most impressive performance of the last week in a win at Northwest. Lyles put up 19 points and added an outstanding 24 rebounds. Lyles has been a double-double machine this season, and there’s no doubt that he’ll likely be a top 25 talent when the 2014 rankings come out.
James Blackmon Jr. (Bishop Luers): Speaking of top 25 talent, Blackmon has continued his hot scoring streak for much of the season. He had a slow game by his standards against FW Northrop on Jan. 13 though, putting up 16 points and six rebounds.
Trevon Bluiett (Park Tudor): I watched Bluiett along with Yogi Ferrell and came away impressed, but it’s clear that Bluiett still needs time to develop. He had 17 points against Lawrence North, most of which came in an impressive second half. He didn’t produce much on the glass though, where he needs to develop. Bluiett added 18 more points in the Panthers’ next game, a loss to Pike.
Jaquan Lyle (Evansville Bosse): Lyle had the other most impressive performance of the week, posting a triple-double against Harrison with 25 points, 12 rebounds, and 11 assists – a fantastic all-around game. he also had a double-double against Evansville Central the day before in the ONB Classic. Lyle was the catalyst in Bosse’s win in the Classic.
Cliff Alexander (Chicago Curie): Alexander also put up a double-double this week and almost registered a triple-double, scoring 17 points, grabbing 14 rebounds and blocking seven shots in a blowout win.
Aaron Brennan (Guerin Catholic): Brennan had 16 points in Guerin Catholic’s first win of the week and 10 points in its next win, a road contest at Terre Haute South.
Grant Evans (Wapahani): Grant Evans helped lead Wapahani to a win in the Delaware County Tournament, adding 16 points in one game and seven points in another win.
Ryan, what rankings are you waiting for? There have been several class rankings out for a couple years now and I’ve seen Lyles as high as #1 and never outside of the top 10. He is currently #8 on ESPN, but we all know how recruiting rankings and services work, right… Lyles is the only kid on the list with any kind of commitment, which makes him less interesting, so he has been dropped down on the list.
