McDonald gets mini-camp invites from Dolphins, Packers

Andrew McDonald doesn’t have an NFL home yet, but the Indiana offensive tackle will have at least two opportunities to earn one.

The 6-foot-6, 295-pounder and Warren Central graduate said that he received invitations from both the Miami Dolphins and Green Bay Packers to attend rookie mini-camps in early May. The Dolphins’ camp runs from Thursday through Sunday, and the Packers’ camp doesn’t begin until May 11, so McDonald said he could attend both to try to earn a free agent contract and a spot in training camp in late summer.

It was a redemptive feeling, McDonald said, to get calls from both clubs after he went undrafted Thursday through Saturday and did not receive word about an undrafted free agent contract on Saturday night.

“It means a lot,” McDonald said. “I couldn’t help but get a little bit depressed for a second there after last night. I just wanted the opportunity to show what I had. This was the best opportunity I could get, and it means a lot. I’m going to take care of what’s in my hands and do the best I can do.”

McDonald was a two-year starter for the Hoosiers at left tackle, protecting IU quarterbacks’ blind sides after Rodger Saffold graduated and became the second round pick of the St. Louis Rams in 2010. McDonald worked out at the St. Vincent’s Performance Center in Indianapolis to prepare for an NFL shot and impressed scouts by bench-pressing 225 pounds 23 times at Indiana’s pro day. He said he’s maintained that level of fitness since March and is physically prepared for whatever he will see at mini-camp.

“I’ve been working out and what not, staying in shape and I’m going to continue that,” McDonald said. “I feel really good going into it. Time will tell.”

The Hoosiers did not have a single player taken in the seven-round NFL draft for the first time since 2009, and, as of Sunday, McDonald was the only former Indiana player who had reached an agreement with an NFL club.
