AAU Team: Eric Gordon Central Stars 15U
Game/Stats: 28 points in a 77-71 win over Indiana Elite Blaze
Skinny: This is sort of cheating because I only watched about five minutes of this game, but that was enough to watch the 6-foot-2 Gordon do a few things that eighth graders pretty much have no earthly business doing.
On one drive, he came off a ball screen at the top of the key, crossed up his defender. Crossed him up again, drove to the bucket, drew contact and made an underhanded layup. He finished with at least 10 field goals, so I imagine this was the sort of thing that happened all game.
I’ve watched Gordon about three times now, and it’s more than a little apparent that he’s advanced. He’s playing up a year and dominating. There are a number of parts to his game that obviously need to develop — he’s in eighth freaking grade, of course there are — but what stands out about him the most is his ability to get to the rim and finish against contact. He’s a long way from being physically filled out, but he has strength beyond his size. His ball control is exceptional and he’s a good on-ball defender already. It might appear bizarre to offer a player who hasn’t been to high school yet a scholarship to college, but Gordon doesn’t appear to be that much of a risk.
