May Classic Player Evaluations: Jalen Coleman

Recruiting status: Offers from Indiana, Purdue, Notre Dame. Interest from Illinois, Michigan State, Michigan, Texas, Florida. Class of 2015.

AAU Team: Spiece Indy Heat Lands

Game/Stats: Eight points in loss to Spice Indy Ice

Skinny: Coleman played mostly off-the-ball in this game, which was strange, because he appears to be the most talented player on the team by a long shot. He said the reason for that was mostly that he was facing zone and trying to run around and flash and grab the ball at the top of the key, but that didn’t work out very well.

At Fort Wayne Run N’Slam, Coleman proved how hard he could be to defend when he does have the ball in his hand. He’s listed at 6-2, but looks taller, and has long arms even with a skinny frame. His handle is exceptional despite that, and he gets to the basket with ease. He also has a strong pull-up game and range out to the 3-point arc, plus court vision and defensive skills. There’s a lot of time separating him between now and his first college game, but Tom Crean’s early scholarship offer doesn’t appear to be much of a risk.
