Thanks to a gift from Bloomington lawyer Ken Nunn, Indiana will be adding 350 handrails to Assembly Hall in time for the 2012-13 season. Indiana’s release on the matter follows.

CUSTOM HANDRAILS TO BE FUNDED THROUGH GIFT FROM BLOOMINGTON LAWYER KEN NUNN
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Work began this week in Assembly Hall to install custom designed handrails to help fans navigate the stadium’s steep stairs and aisles.
Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass announced that the handrail project was the result of a collaborative effort between IU Athletics and University officials, including President Michael McRobbie, Vice President for Capital Planning and Facilities Tom Morrison and Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Neil Theobald.
“From basketball games to commencement, hundreds of thousands of Hoosiers navigate Assembly Hall’s steps each year,” said Glass. “As one of the largest multi-use facilities on campus, these handrails are a long overdue addition, and we are thrilled that the University and Ken Nunn came together with us to make this possible.”
The handrail project will include approximately 350 handrails, located every other row. Fans will still be able to walk through sections within the existing arena. The handrails will be installed in the center of the aisles on both sides of the arena and will not obstruct views of Branch McCracken Court.
“We want everyone who comes into Assembly Hall to have a safe and enjoyable experience,” said Morrison. “The addition of these handrails fulfill that mission, and we are pleased that the design will ensure IU guests can see all of the action on the floor.”
The aluminum handrails will be mounted to the vertical face of the concrete risers/steps and will have rounded corners to maximize the line of sight. With a powder-coat finish, the railings will match the prominent IU red color throughout the stadium. The railings are being fabricated by Bloomington’s local fabricator, Jerico Metals.
Funding for the project was made possible thanks to a generous gift provided by Bloomington lawyer, Ken Nunn.
“One of the reasons I did this is because I love Indiana University Basketball and Indiana University,” said Nunn. “This was a thing that the University needed and the fans needed, so it’s my honor to provide this ability to help folks get up and down these steps.”
“We want to thank Ken Nunn for providing the necessary funding,” added Glass. “We also want to show our appreciation to President McRobbie for prioritizing this project and Vice Presidents Morrison and Theobald for their support regarding the project’s design, installation, procurement, and financing.”
The installation process will continue over the next few weeks and will be fully completed by the start of basketball season.
