Bolser cleared and other topics from Wilson’s radio show

Indiana tight end Ted Bolser said on his Twitter account Monday that he had been cleared to play in Saturday’s game against Ohio State after having been ejected from last week’s game against Michigan State. There is no rule requiring a one-game suspension following an in-game ejection, but the Big Ten reserves the right to institute a suspension for improper game conduct. Indiana coach Kevin Wilson confirmed on his radio show Monday night that Bolser had been cleared to play.

“The play came down, it was a muffed punt that the referees, when they saw it right away said that they recovered the ball, but at the same time it was a scrum for the ball,” Wilson said. “There was not a great sense of urgency to separate. Nothing got out of hand other than guys just fighting for the ball. I think as we were fighting for the ball, a referee thought he saw a punch and threw him out of the game. When they looked at it on tape, there wasn’t enough evidence. You could tell even when it happened, there were no emotions other than guys fighting for what appeared to be a loose ball. But the call was made on the field that didn’t go that way. When we spoke to the official guys, they said they were looking at it. They didn’t think (there was a punch). What are my thoughts? I said, the TV footage shows more than the game footage. The call went down where it just didn’t get handled quickly. These guys were fighting a little bit for a ball but not fighting each other. We’re gonna protect players and sportsmanship is big in the Big Ten.  I think when they looked at it, they didn’t think it was an unsportsmanlike play. They ruled to allow Ted (to play.) I’m glad for Ted. I’m glad that they just sorted it out and took their time. … Ted, he’s an Ohio guy, so a chance to play the Buckeyes is special. I didn’t bring that up to those guys, because that wasn’t a factor. The footage, the ruling, what they saw, they visited with all parties and came to that. Selfishly for Ted, I’m happy for Ted.”

Other notes from the radio show:

–Wilson was asked if that play, a muffed punt by Michigan State, was ruled dead too soon. He said the officials thought the punt returner got the ball right away, and it didn’t matter anyway.

“That is what it is,” Wilson said. “Even though that’s critical and you get a possession back, we didn’t deserve to win that game. You’ve gotta put it together. We got what we deserved in that game.”

— Wilson said he went into Saturday’s game expecting to play both Cameron Coffman and Nate Sudfeld and said the competition is still close.

“Today it was still 50-50,” Wilson said. “If I looked up now, I’d say Nate was a little better today. They’re so close, just the dynamics of that game started working really well for Cam. But it wasn’t Cam, it was the guys around him. We were playing fast on the perimeter. We were making plays. he was putting the ball on target. They weren’t putting pressure on him. We need to get the run game going better. But the defense was getting three-and-outs, we were getting the ball, we were attacking. The team, defense was getting three-and-outs, we were getting the ball, we were attacking. He was in rhythm, but the whole offense was. The opposite of Northwestern where I don’t think in the first half we were in rhythm or he had any help. The quarterback is always gonna look good when everyone else is playing good around him. In the first half, everyone was playing well and Cam just played like he was capable of. By the same token, I would’ve expected Nate to play, he didn’t. I would expect it to be a similar situation this week. By no means did we settle on Cam. Just the way it played out, we were so far into the game and we didn’t really play enough snaps to say it was anybody’s fault in the second half.”

— Wilson said punter Mitchell Voss told the staff that he wanted backup Erich Toth to hold for field goals and extra points even though quarterback Cam Coffman was listed as the backup holder.

“Erich came in and did a phenomenal job and actually did a much better job in placements where we’d been holding a couple of guys,” Wilson said. “Because he and Mitch, they’re always working on the side, Mitch said, ‘I want him to do it.’ We had some critical kicks after Mitchell Voss went down and really the placements and the snap and the hold of the extra points and field goals were just as critical as what he did on the punt team.”

Wilson said Voss’s injury is an ankle and that he will likely be out this week.
