CBSSports.com names Zeller Preseason Player of the Year

CBSSports.com released it’s preseason All-American and All-Freshman teams on Monday and named Cody Zeller Preseason National Player of the Year.

And Jeff Goodman’s explanation of why that was is pretty simple.

“He’ll be the preseason pick for this award by just about everyone because he’s the best player, potentially the top overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft and plays for arguably the top team. Zeller does everything for the Hoosiers — he scores, rebounds, defends, runs the court and leads by example. If there’s a weakness, it’s that Zeller isn’t selfish enough. He needs to take more shots — and if he does, he should be a 20 and 10 guy almost every single night.”

You should probably just go ahead and presume that Zeller will be a Preseason All-American on every list you see this year.

Of note, Michigan point guard Trey Burke is listed as a second-team All-American. Ohio State’s DeShaun Thomas and Aaron Craft were named to the third team along with Minnesota’s Trevor Mbakwe. Indiana point guard Yogi Ferrell was named second team All-Freshman.

UPDATE: Also, CBS released it’s top 100 list. Zeller is No. 1, Christian Watford No. 35 and Victor Oladipo No. 84.

I’m expecting Harvard to suggest Goodman is beginning an East Coast Establishment conspiracy to try to make Zeller be more selfish and in so doing destroy Indiana team chemistry in 5…4..3..

More of a conspiracy to simply inflate the head far, far, too much. It won’t work. Indiana kids are too grounded to turn into Austin River-like big heads.

And Zeller has plenty of room for improvement…Does he have a girl friend as attractive as Ryan Kartje’s?

I do agree with his assessment of Watford being much higher on a top 100 list than Oladipo.

Mitch McGary will keep Michigan in the hunt and on our heels…This season will have its share of challenges.

Crean’s success dictates potential IU-Stevens marriage

By Jeff Goodman | CBSSports.com College Basketball Insider
    Oct. 25, 2011

Indiana will be improved this season. No, they won’t win 20 games and I’d be shocked if the Hoosiers make the NCAA tournament. They’ll probably make an appearance in one of those irrelevant postseason events such as the CBI or CollegeInsider.com, maybe even the NIT</a>.

But Crean and his staff are taking steps — both on and off the court. Indiana should win 16 or so games, which will be enough to keep the rabid Hoosiers fans in check for another year.

That’s when IU basketball should return to the national landscape, possibly even a mainstay in the Top 25.

I really don’t think I would be putting a whole lot of stock in this guy’s opinion.

Last October his crystal ball didn’t look to sharp.

Harvard’s predictions were far more accurate(22 wins, NCAA berth, Top 20 ranking by mid Dec ’11, undefeated going into the Big 10 season, win over UK @ home, Remy Abell’s rise to becoming a key contributor when most on LiveChats and this blog were doubting he’d ever sniff the court)

It’s really quite amazing just how far off some of these Establishment guys can be…Goodman is from Boston. It’s not his fault.

It takes no genius at this point to realize the train has arrived at the station. Harvard saw the Hoosier train coming when these pundits, experts, and doubters of the Establishment were treating us sound like slow syrup dripping out a Vermont maple.

Play the conspiracy mocking game with me all you want, Dustin. Fact remains, the accuracy of my analysis in detecting the pulse on the Hoosiers success last season was not matched by any within your profession(local or national).

I wonder if Goodman still thinks Brad Stevens will be the next coach of the Hoosiers…? Talk about conspiracy theories…

Truth? At the end of the day, I listened to 4guards from two years ago.

He never stopped telling me just how good Cody could be. All of us certainly have to remember his “everything hinges” drumbeat(train whistle blow?) that never ended(along with a full dose of despise for Crean). I was hooked on Brandon Dawson(my NW Indiana favoritism blinding my vision in taking a real look at Zeller). I wanted Dawson in candy-stripes more than Zeller.

I was reluctant to believe 4guards until I saw Zeller play in those first games last season. It was so obvious he was going to change the landscape…I knew at that point anything was possible for the 2011 team. I knew the train was coming. I shot high on the predictions and got lucky.

I agree, Southport65. Even at the height of Bob Knight’s success, there were a lot of Indiana HS star players that left the state, some of those a lot better than Zeller.

It would be great to land Zeller, and send a message that IU’s recruiting has taken another step up. But he’s not the savior of IU’s basketball program and losing him to another school will not devastate IU’s program. And I think IU’s recruiting has already turned the corner.

Even on Knight’s best teams, IU was never recognized as having the best athletic talent on the floor or the most superstars on the team. It’s how the talent they have plays together that counts, not how many 5-star HS recruits they get. I sight last year’s Butler team in support of that statement. If accumulating 5-star talent is all that mattered, Kentucky would have won the championship last year and Memphis in the years before. How many rings has Calipari won? Zero.

I enjoyed that dead-on look into the future.

    4guards
    Friday, October 15, 2010 – 4:09 PM UTC

If we land Zeller, the tide has turned in recruiting. Watch Yogi and Perea follow up shortly after. If we lose Zeller, Crean is left with another poor class and lost out on all the IN kids once again , Teague, Dawson, Zeller, Plumlee. Yogi and Perea will see the talent shortfall and start looking at other schools.

EVERYTHING hinges on getting Zeller to commit. No better time for Tom to get his first 5 star recruit.
