BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Head Coach Tracy Smith and his IU Baseball staff recently inked six student-athletes to join the program for the 2013-14 academic year. Austin Cangelosi, Austin Foote, Brent Gibbs, Alex Krupa, Reece Phillips and Demetrius Webb are slated to don the Cream and Crimson for the ’14 Hoosier Baseball campaign.
AUSTIN CANGELOSI • INF

“You can tell Austin is a son of a former Major Leaguer,” said Head Coach Tracy Smith. “He plays the game the right way and has exceptional instincts on the diamond. He is a relentless player and has a toughness to his game that will fit in well with our players. We look for him to compete right away for a spot in our lineup.”
AUSTIN FOOTE • LHP
6’2 • 175 lbs. • Lake Zurich, Ill. • Lake Zurich H.S.
Racked up 67 strikeouts in 11 appearances during the 2012 high school season … totaled six wins, including three complete games, while posting a 2.18 ERA and holding the opposition to a .212 batting average against … in summer ball, tossed 41 innings with 55 Ks, a 1.35 ERA and four complete games … product of Team Fastball and Top Tier summer programs … the son of Laura and Mike Foote … his father played baseball at Millikin University.
“The thing we like most about Austin is he is still developing,” said Smith. “Austin loves to pitch and compete and wants to do so at a high level. He has had a lot of success up to this point in his career, but we feel he has yet to reach his potential physically. When he does, he will be a solid arm in our conference for years to come.”
BRENT GIBBS • C
6’2 • 215 lbs. • R/R • Godfrey, Ill. • Alton H.S.
Rated the best catcher in Prep Baseball Report’s eight-state coverage area and the 6th-best prospect overall from the state of Illinois … carries a .445 career batting average into his high school senior season … totaled seven homeruns, 74 RBI and 18 doubles during sophomore and junior campaigns … two-time St. Louis All-Metro Team selection … spent the fall playing for the Reds Midwest Scout Team … selected by the Houston Astros 18U International Team … product of the St. Louis Gamers summer program … the son of Mary and Shane Gibbs.
“Brent is a special player. He has power, and an exceptional throwing arm from behind the plate. He is also the type of player you build your offense around, because his bat is a ‘middle-of-the-order’ type bat. We made the catching position a priority in this class and we feel we landed the best one available. He is going to be an impact player in our program, and we can’t wait to be a part of his development.”
ALEX KRUPA • OF
5’9 • 175 lbs. • L/R • Greenwood, Ind. • Greenwood H.S.
Prep Baseball Report’s third-ranked outfielder in their eight-state coverage area and third-highest rated player overall from the state of Indiana … batted .527 and slugged .742 with 32 RBI, eight doubles and 49 runs scored during 2012 high school season … blazed the basepaths with 22 steals on 23 attempts … selected to participate in the USA Baseball Tournament of Stars and the East Coast Pro Showcase … 2012 First Team All-State … 2011 All-State honorable mention … spent his summers playing for the Indiana Bulls and Indiana Venom … the son of Vicki Anderson and Jim Krupa … sister, Krystiana, currently attends IU.
“Alex is a true lead-off guy. He is one of the fastest players in the country. He had a tremendous showing at the Team USA tryouts. He is a run-producing machine once he gets on the bases. With the new stadium’s big outfield, we couldn’t have signed a better player to fit our needs. Alex knows he can play at a high level. He could have chosen anywhere in the country to play, but wanted to be a Hoosier.”
REECE PHILLIPS • LHP
6’1 • 175 lbs. • Ellettsville, Ind. • Edgewood H.S.
Missed the majority of junior season due to injury … a state finalist in track & field (400m) … played summer ball with the Indiana Venom… the son of Amy and Brad Phillips.
“We loved Reece’s arm action the first time we saw it. He battled an injury last season, and therefore flew under the radar a bit. Now that he is fully healthy, we expect big things from him next year. Reece will also be one of the most athletic kids on our team as he is an accomplished football player and track runner. Reece is another Indiana kid who made it a priority to play for the Hoosiers.”
DEMETRIUS WEBB • C
5’11 • 180 lbs. • R/R • Indianapolis, Ind. • North Central H.S.
Ranked as the second-best catcher and 19th player overall in the state of Indiana by Prep Baseball … 2012 Golden Glove Award … totaled 16 assists from behind the dish, including a perfect 3-for-3 on gunning out stolen base attempts … Indiana Bulls summer program product … also selected for 100 Black Men 2012-13 Beautillion Militaire … the son of Veronica and Kevin Robinson.
“We love Demetrius’s ability to handle pitchers and his ability control the running game. He is ready right now defensively, and will continue to improve offensively. We feel like we got the best defensive catcher in the state. Demetrius is an Indiana kid who wanted to be a Hoosier. We are excited about his passion for baseball and IU.”
