Blackmon sets career high, record

A spectacular season continued for 2014 IU recruit James Blackmon Jr. on Wednesday. The 6-foot-2 junior, coming off an ACL injury last year, poured in a career-high 45 points in Fort Wayne Luers’ 101-87 loss to Fort Wayne Snider in the SAC Tournament.

The 45 points also breaks the previous tourney single-game scoring record of 43 previously held by another Luers standout, Deshaun Thomas, now of Ohio State. Thomas set the record as a junior in 2008.

That brings Blackmon’s season average to 392 points per game, which would be the best in the state according to statistical sites MaxPreps and Varvee. He was also averaging better than 10 rebounds a game entering play Wednesday.

39.2 ppg? That’s excellent he came back so well from his surgery. I’d like to hear more about his defensive ability too. He seems to score a lot of points but his team gives more up. Is he decent defensively and its more the team is so weak?

I was there. He took a LOT of shots to get there and the game was pretty well decided by the 4th quarter. Still, he has a nice stroke and and strong move to the hole. Had a nice put back jam. Defense is weak, and a couple plays near the end he didn’t even bother running back down the court to fake D. His freshman brother (IU offer?) has a nice shot as well.

And the pundits say this kid is only a 3-star prospect? Fools!

Coachv – no… Lyles was #1 in some rankings when he signed. I’ve never seen Blackmon inside the top 20 on any list.

Higgi – I’m not sure which Pundits you’re talking about… ESPN has him at #39 and 4-stars, and Rivals has him at #48 and 4-stars

I thought I read when Blackmon verballed that he was the # 1 point guard in his class? Lyles was the # 1 center in his class when he verballed. The article I read had them broke down by positions.

Chuck Franz averaged 32.7 points per game. He did score 51 against New Albany in the sectional but he didn’t average 50 points per game.
