Bloomington North athlete Lorrell Williams chooses IU

Bloomington North athlete Lorrell Williams announced on Twitter Monday night that he’ll play football at Indiana.

Williams missed most of his senior season after breaking his arm in North’s third game of the year. He was one of the Herald-Times’ 12 Players to Watch in 2012 after a solid junior campaign as the Cougars’ quarterback. In 2011 Williams threw for 611 yards and one touchdown on 59 of 99 passes, while running for 575 yards and six touchdowns on 132 carries. He also caught 10 passes for 83 yards.

Williams was listed at 6-foot-2, 228 pounds last season. He’ll join former North players Ty Smith and D’Angelo Roberts at Indiana.

“He’s a gamer,” Bloomington North coach Scott Bless said before the season. “He’s one of those guys that performs best in tight situations. He’s a very relaxed athlete, and it’s his game when things are tight and on the line. That’s when he’s at his best.”

We’ll have more on Williams later today.

I know nothing about this kid. Any idea what position Williams will play? It’s unlikely he will compete for the QB job at IU (unless he red shirts and then waits a couple years). Given his size, he looks like a running back or linebacker. At 228 pounds coming out of High School, it’s easy to see him playing at 240 pounds. If he has any speed at all, that would be a formidable weapon.

This kid is a football player. Played really well at receiver as a junior. Could potentially line up at WR, TE or LB. The kid has a great attitude and he’s a worker. I think he’ll find a way to contribute on the field.
