Indiana falls to No. 2 in both polls

Indiana’s loss to Minnesota on Tuesday was costly in the polls, but not very much so.

The Hoosiers fell to No. 2 in both the Associated Press and USA Today polls. Gonzaga moved up to No. 1 in both with 51 first-place votes in the AP poll and 29 first-place votes in the USA Today coaches poll. The Bulldogs have the nation’s best record at 29-2, but play in the mid-major West Coast Conference.

Duke, Kansas and Georgetown rounded out the top five in the AP poll.. Kansas was No. 3 in the USA Today poll followed by Duke and Georgetown. Michigan is No. 7 in the AP poll and No. 8 in the coaches’ poll. Michigan State is No. 10 and No. 12. Ohio State moved up to No. 14 in the AP poll and No. 13 in the USA Today poll. Wisconsin is No. 22 in the AP poll and No. 21 in the coaches’ poll, giving the Big Ten five top 25 teams in both polls.

Play no one, win while everyone else loses and you too can be ranked #1. Will Gonzaga even get a #1 if they win out?

Monday, March 4, 2013 - 2:01 PM EDT

The Zags can have it. They will be the next #1 to fall. They would be somewhere in the middle of the pack in the Big Ten, if they a member. Their conference does not equal the Big Ten. Besides, how many top 25 teams have they beaten?

Mike, I listened to Lunardi and he was unclear last Friday but I have the sense they will get a 1 seed in their corner of the bracket…bad deal I know.

I bet 15-20 teams in the top 25 would beat Gonzaga any day of the week!

Sour Grapes. It means nothing.

I am much more concerned about the game tomorrow.

So in the coaches poll Indiana got no first place vote. That is some vote of confidence from Coach Tom Crean’s very distinguished colleagues, you know, people that know their stuff not riff-raff like me or Chet. NO FIRST PLACE VOTE! That’s how much they liked the coaching of their colleague apparently.

Enough said. Based on what he showed this season, but not only, Crean definitely deserves some form of Coaching Awesomeness Commendation Award (CACA).

So, if we win, will they present the title to us Tuesday night before/during Sr. night festivities?

Monday, March 4, 2013 - 3:29 PM EDT

Hey Jeremy/Dustin (or anybody)

Remember watching Senior night activities last yr. Where was it? If and where can we see it this yr?

#9 Monday, March 4, 2013 - 3:30 PM EDT

It will apparently be on both ESPN3 and the Big Ten Network’s website, Ron.

They beat, at the time, #22 Oklahoma State. The lost to Illinois and Butler when both of those teams were ranked. That concludes the lost of ranked teams they have played.

J Pat,

I just don’t see it. As long as IU gets the overall and placed in the Midwest, that is all that matters.

Jeff Sagarin says Gonzaga is number nine in the country. I trust his numbers.
Oh, and Butler (with a coach so much better/smarter/tougher than Tom Crean), just lost to Virginia Commonwealth 84-52.
I am worn out with IU/Crean bashers.

Tomahawk – That is a tad strange that IU got 28 first place votes last week and 0 this week. I know you’re fishing for a reaction with your Crean comments, so here you go… It is a well known fact that most coaches do not fill out the voting forms themselves, but give the duty over to an assistant coach. So your theory that his peers are making a statement about him fail on multiple levels:

1) if it were his peers… IU got 28 votes in the coaches poll last week, and have earned more first place votes than any other team this year. So if anything the statement is that Crean is a good coach.

2) if it isn’t other head coaches… Well then it’s not his peers making a statement about him in the first place.

Much like Mike P said, the most important thing right now isn’t being #1, it’s getting the #1 seed in the Midwest Regional. As long as we win 1 of the next 2 games we’ll almost certainly wrap that up. They’ve played well under pressure so far this year, and played really well at home. I’m hoping those trends continue tomorrow night.

Thanks for your very kind response.

I like Crean. I think he strives when there’s adversity.

I hope the 0 motivates him. He (I repeat, he) beat OSU once, and I think OSU goes down on Tue really hard. I am grateful to him for what he did at IU these four years and I hope he gets a national title. He deserves it.

Take it easy buddy!

Hey Sean… You got a sincere chuckle out of me… I wasn’t expecting that response. Glad you’re a Crean fan. I have a hard time keeping track on here sometimes.

Big Ten Network tonight 9PM ET(Monday) has Greg Shaheen, on “Inside the Selection Process” he was the NCAA’s Mr. Bracket for the previous 12 tournaments before the NCAA forced him out. Might be interesting to see his insight for the upcoming brackets.

Blessing in disguise…now IU can focus on winning the Big Ten outright Tuesday night, and then go into Ann Arbor without the immense bullseye that goes along with being #1. Now just win baby, and IU will be #1 when it matters most – the end of the Tourney!

Monday, March 4, 2013 - 11:54 PM EDT

Gonzaga #1.

That’s hilarious.

Well, their players can at least cut that poll out of the papers and show their grandkids.

I was reading in USA Today where a bunch of coaches were saying this could be the year a #1 falls to a #16 seed.

There’s your team that will fall.

Before everyone keeps bashing a small school such as Gonzaga, one might wanna stop & think of some of the upsets this year. Not simply the upsets but just how bad these teams were slaughtered in those upsets.
