Chris Webb of the B1G Baseball blog reported on Tuesday that Indiana baseball coach Tracy Smith had been granted an extension through 2015. Indiana athletic director Fred Glass confirmed that was true, but that it was actually an automatic extender as part of his 2010 contract. Glass’s intention, he said, is to construct a contract that would keep the 2013 Big Ten and National College Baseball Writers Association Coach of the Year in Bloomington well beyond 2015.
“What we’re talking about is a new contract that would significantly extend the term,” Glass said by phone Tuesday evening. “My hope is that we have it buttoned up by the time the new school year starts.”
Glass said shortly after the Hoosiers’ College World Series run that he would engage with Smith in talks over a variety of issues about expanding the athletic department’s commitment to baseball and an extension was apparently part of the deal. Glass said the two sides have made significant progress throughout the summer.
“It’s been just what I hoped and expected it to be,” Glass said. “Very amiable and very interactive. I think we’re very close to a positive result.”
According to the Herald-Times IU database, Smith made $256,244 in total compensation in 2012.
