Corrado, Kotlov taken in MLS SuperDraft

After no Hoosiers were selected in last Thursday’s first two rounds of the 2014 MLS SuperDraft, a pair of Indiana men’s soccer players were chose in the third and fourth round on Tuesday.

Midfielder A.J. Corrado (Zionsville) was taken by the San Jose Earthquakes with the ninth pick of the third round and 47th pick overall. Corrado will get a chance to be reunited with IU teammate Tommy Thompson, who signed a homegrown contract with San Jose last Friday.

Midfielder Nikita Kotlov (Indianpolis North Central) was taken with the 16th pick of the fourth round and 73rd pick overall by the Portland Timbers, who are coached by former IU player and assistant coach Caleb Porter.

Jacob Bushue and Dylan Mares were not selected in the draft.

Two other former Hoosiers are set to be introduced Wednesday at 3:30 as the newest members of the Indy Eleven pro soccer franchise in Indianpolis. A formal introduction will take place in a press conference at the I-Lounge at Assembly Hall at 3:30 Wednesday and a fan forum will be held at the Uptown Cafe in Bloomington from 5-6:30 p.m.

The full IU release on Corrado and Kotlov being drafted follows:

Indiana University midfielder A.J. Corrado was the 47th overall pick by the San Jose Earthquakes, and midfielder Nikita Kotlov was the 73rd overall pick by the Portland Timbers in today’s third and fourth rounds of the 2014 Major League Soccer SuperDraft.

Corrado and Kotlov become the 42nd and 43rd Indiana players selected in the MLS Draft since the league’s inception in 1996. The Hoosiers’ last draft selections came in 2013 when Eriq Zavaleta was the 10th overall pick by the Seattle Sounders and Luis Soffner was the 36th overall selection by the New England Revolution.

All-American Nick Garcia remains the highest-ever IU player selected as the second overall pick in 2000.

Corrado was the ninth pick of the third round and one of three players selected by San Jose today. He joins Hoosier Tommy Thompson in San Jose, who recently agreed to terms on a Homegrown contract with the Earthquakes.

“I am very excited to be drafted by San Jose,” Corrado said. “I’m looking forward to preseason and moving forward with my soccer career.”

Corrado recently completed his IU career by leading Indiana to the 2013 Big Ten Men’s Soccer Tournament title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. During his three seasons at IU Corrado appeared in 68 matches, making 50 starts. As a sophomore in 2011 he tallied two goals and four assists in 22 appearances.

His junior year saw him earn first-team All-Big Ten, Capital One Academic All-District and Academic All-Big Ten honors as the Hoosiers won the 2012 NCAA Championship. Corrado led the Big Ten in assists with 12, while also tallying one goal in 24 starts.

As a senior Corrado was again a Capital One Academic All-America third-team selection, a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award and earned second-team All-Big Ten honors. He led IU in assists with seven, while finishing tied for first on the team in points with 13.

Kotlov was the 16th pick of the fourth round and will join former Indiana player and coach Caleb Porter, who is entering his second season as head coach of the Timbers.

“I am honored to be drafted by Portland with the opportunity to play in such an amazing atmosphere,” Kotlov said. “Now I have to work hard to earn a contract and start my professional career with the Timbers.

Kotlov was a four-year contributor at Indiana, appearing in 85 matches with 64 starts. In 2013 he finished tied for the team lead in goals scored with five, while also adding three assists. Kotlov was a second-team All-Big Ten pick in 2013 and 2012, and a first-team honoree in 2011.

As a junior in 2012 Kotlov tallied nine goals and four assists, including the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Georgetown in the NCAA title game. Five of Kotlov’s nine goals came in the NCAA postseason as he also recorded a hat trick in a 4-1 win over Xavier in the second round, and scored the tying goal and assisted on the game winner at Notre Dame in a game the Hoosiers would go on to win 2-1 in double overtime.

Kotlov tallied nine goals as a sophomore in 2011, including a career-best three game winning-goals that season. As a freshman he started 16 of 20 games played and finished with three goals and six assists as the Hoosiers won the Big Ten regular season title.

Indiana ranks second among college programs with 43 MLS draft picks since 1996. Since 2008 the Hoosiers have had 15 players drafted, with 13 of those coming in the SuperDraft.

Great news for AJ and Nikita and for IU Soccer! For great HS players the track record is clear: go to IU, get a great degree, beautiful co-eds, great coaching, famous tradition, win an NCAA Title, and have a great opportunity to play professionally! Some smart professional team will recognize that Jacob Bushue can really play soccer and make other talented players better. He deserves the chance!
